A Leadership Minute: What can You do in 2013
It’s that time of the year again. The time of New Year resolutions, goal setting, and the starting over with a clean slate.
Amusingly, I heard that my university gym was so crowded that they had to turn people away!
Yeap, it’s that time when we decide that we need to exercise more and stay healthy in our lifestyles. But I guess not many will last past the first month.
As I am getting ready to speak to my team about goal setting, I reflected on my past goal setting practices and thought about how best to help my team set their personal life goals.
Over the years, I realized that there were goals I simply couldn’t fulfil no matter how many times I wrote it down. ( Gaining weight being one of them!) I always attributed it to my laziness and unmotivated nature, but I recently had an epiphany.
When you are setting a goal, set a discipline you can control!
Simple example: One of the goals I set almost yearly is ‘Gain weight to 65kg’. I never achieved it. I could never achieve it because I couldn’t control how much my body weight could increase.
I realized this: It would have been much more effective had I said ‘Go to the gym twice a week’ or ‘run 10km weekly’. I could control this; I just had to take adjustments to my calendar.
The outcome ‘go to the gym twice a week’ or ‘run 10km weekly’ was within my control, and thereby I felt motivated to make that adjustment.
By setting a weekly goal that you can achieve immediately, you empower yourself to do it!
Eventually, I know I’ll have that body weight increase, because I achieved this weekly goal of exercise. So today, set some goals that are actionable immediately! Instead of saying,
- ‘I want to be drafted for the national soccer team’, say ‘I will practice soccer three times a week’
- ‘I want to increase in my knowledge of economics,’ say ‘ I will read 10 books on business and economics this year.’
- ‘I want to find a life partner,’ say ‘ I will join two social or interest groups this year.’
What goals can you set today that allow you for action NOW? Write them down and start on them immediately.
