A Leadership Minute: Personal Leadership

I strongly believe in a leadership that starts with self. While a lot of people subscribe to the idea that you can actually apply techniques to manage people, but I believe that there’s really no such thing.

I’ve seen people in leadership positions try to do it, and it always ends up a mess.

True authentic leadership always begins with self-leadership. The best leaders in history were often the most disciplined, courageous of the lot, that’s what made them leaders.

They were willing to stand in the front, bear the responsibility and face the consequences.

To me, the first thing you have to do if we want to be a leader is to simply learn to lead ourselves. For a start, you should lead yourself in these areas.

Goals – Where are you headed in your life? Are you purposefully seeking ways to achieve those goals? Most people live life not knowing what they should do, and they love to follow a man with a plan.

Discipline and Focus – Are you staying focused and true to your goals, or are you constantly distracted by the many minor things around you? A strong organization always has good discipline and excellent standards, but these standards must start from your own life. You must practice what you preach.

Courage – Will you choose to stand your ground despite your fears; despite being ridiculed or mocked for your beliefs and your actions? Can you do the unpopular thing? Most leaders stood out because they refused to do the popular thing and follow the crowd. In fact, this very attribute is what defines them as leaders.

Start with yourself. Don’t for a moment think you can become a better leader by acquiring more knowledge from books or seminars. It all comes down to personal leadership.

To your success,

One of my most favorite business books has got to be the Ultimate Sales Machine. This book explores 12 strategies you can use to explode your bottom line. I’ve read a lot of books on business sales and marketing, and I’ve got to say that this is one of the best.

Chet Holmes speaks from experiences and gives very practical strategies that you can implement and use as a leader, manager or an entrepreneur. I highly recommend this read!
