Growing the Leader in You, Issue #024 — Habit #1: The Power of Vision

Issue 24: The Power of Vision

Let’s talk about the first of the 6 habits: The power and practice of vision.

One of the simplest illustrations of the power of vision is the behavior of heat energy from the Sun.

The Sun is a great source of energy and warmth for us. When it comes out in the day, it makes the cold night just warm enough for us to go out and play or work.

But what happens when we FOCUS the energy of the sun? I’m sure you have done this experiment before in your youth:

The concentrated energy of the sun does not just warm and object, but burns it! That’s how powerful focused energy can become!

Yes, with the power of vision comes the power of focus. When you know what you want to achieve in your life, you will commit all your energies to it, and suddenly a benign power becomes a deep passionate fire that can change the situation!

With vision comes focus, with focus comes the power to change reality!

But what happened to vision?

One of the most limited resources in the world is not oil, not gold, not land but vision.

Les Brown puts it well:

“The graveyard is the richest place on earth, because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered, all because someone was too afraid to take that first step, keep with the problem, or determined to carry our their dream.”

Most of us start out our lives with something we want to achieve; some more exciting, out-of-this-world, others more realistic and manageable visions and dreams.

But the sad thing is, usually reality takes over. Instead of CREATING reality with our vision, the reality of the world shapes us and usually ends up diluting or completely destroying the vision.

The vision doesn’t die immediately. It usually dies a slow death. With more unpaid bills and more tasks to be done, it slowly disappears from our lives until we barely remember it.

Hopefully, you’re not reached that stage yet. I believe that deep within you lies a desire to do something great, something meaningful that will make the world a better place.

In my book Everyday Leadership, I talk about 4 practical benefits of having vision in your life:

  • It helps you to make better decisions
  • It gives you a reason to be disciplined
  • It cultivates the quality of perseverance in you

And of course…

  • Having a vision come to pass is one of the most rewarding things in life.

But the important question is: if you’re not dreaming, not passionate or just simply lethargic, how can you find vision in your life?

In the book Everyday Leadership, I give you some practical ideas on how you can develop this vision and keep it going without letting life get to you.
